Butternut Sustainable Farms is a family owned farm which began in 2012.  The ground we farm has been in our family since the 1880's.  Butternut Farms uses natural, chemical free methods to grow high quality salad mix, vegetables and fruits. We are committed to providing fresh, locally grown produce to customers in St. Joseph County, the Kalamazoo area  and many celebrated restaurants in South Bend and greater Chicago.

Jonathan Templin, proprietor and farmer, found his passion for sustainable farming through Goshen College and the Agroecology Program at Merry Lea Environmental Center. Jonathan also worked at a farm near Jones, Michigan.  We owe Kate and James Lind a huge debt of gratitude for sharing their skill, principles, knowledge and wisdom.  These experiences and their generosity will benefit our community, our health and our family for many years to come. 

  Customers have expressed an interest in having a box of our fresh produce available on a weekly basis.  These requests led us to put together a Community Shared Agriculture program. Please contact us for more information regarding a weekly box of veggies. 

People have inquired about serving an internship on the farm.  We are always looking for people prepared to make a commitment  to hard yet rewarding work during diverse weather conditions in a beautiful location.  We are in a rural setting yet within 1 hour of Kalamazoo, South Bend\Mishawaka and Fort Wayne.  We are 2 1/2 hours from Chicago and Detroit.  What you will experience by working with us includes planting, weeding, watering, harvesting, cleaning and delivery of fresh and healthful food to a variety of food outlets.
